Light Opera of Portland Seeking Music Director
Light Opera of Portland is currently seeking a Music Director for our spring 2027 production of The Sorcerer by Gilbert and Sullivan, with the potential to continue with future productions. Light Opera of Portland is a volunteer based 501c3 nonprofit, and the Music Director currently receives a stipend of $2000 per production.

The responsibilities and expectations of the Music Director are as follows:
Responsibilities:
Helps define rehearsal schedules with the Director for learning solos and choruses.
Attends and leads scheduled rehearsals. Leads music focused rehearsals.
Works with the Director to define the vocal and musical qualities desired for the production.
Provides feedback and guidance during combined rehearsals with respect to developing/improving the musical production of the performance.
Recruits instrumentalists for orchestra in conjunction with Board recruiter. Consult with Artistic Director about which instruments are critical to the score.
Directs orchestra for performances.
Attends regular production meetings during production calendar
Expectations:
Attendance: The Music Director is expected to be present at all rehearsals scheduled, unless prohibited by illness. It is the responsibility of the Music Director to communicate all absences to the Artistic Director at least 24 hours in advance when possible. If more than two rehearsals are missed, the Board reserves the right to terminate this contract.
Communication: The Music Director is expected to communicate with members of production team about issues that come up in the rehearsal/production process.
Orchestra: The Music Director is expected to begin recruiting orchestra members once performance dates are announced, and to have the list of orchestra members finalised within one month of the cast being announced. The Music Director is expected to schedule regular orchestra rehearsals prior to the first combined rehearsal with cast and orchestra together.
