The traditional classic tale moves to a new and far-distant setting.
August 22, 2018
Portland, Ore – 8/20/18 – The Light Opera of Portland (LOoP), in keeping with their custom of “Absurdity done in Complete Sincerity,” will transport Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado to the far-distant planet of Pitiyu between September 20th and 30th, 2018 at the Alpenrose Dairyville Opera House.
The Mikado opened on the London stage in 1885 and immediately became a world sensation. Before the end of 1885, it was estimated that, in Europe and America, at least 150 companies were producing the opera. LOoP follows Gilbert’s original intention of satirizing the British government of the period, but moves the story locale to the small and far-distant planet of Pitiyu in the constellation of Zhartan. It is the traditional classic comic opera that has tickled the funny bone of audiences for 133 years. Attendees will enjoy the beautiful Sullivan melodies sung by the fabulous voices of LOoP while laughing their way through this hysterically funny comedy in its new far-distant setting.
Why an Outer Space Mikado?
Gilbert & Sullivan were in the business of presenting social and political satire, often based in different settings and cultures. These include the land of Fairy, the Venetian republic, the fictional land of Barataria, the fictional south sea island of Utopia, and the fictional Asian village of Titipu. The settings were designed to be colorful but incidental to the satire of the inequities or fallacies that existed in British society.
LOoP Artistic Director Dennis Britten says: “Following Star Trek’s lead, we find that today outer space is the final frontier where we can confront our own humanity. This is the basis for our comedy The Outer Space Mikado of Planet Pitiyu.”
Performances are at 7:00PM on September 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, and 29, and at 2:00PM on September 22, 23, 29, and 30th. Tickets are available at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3594174. As has been their custom, the LOoP players will be serving ice cream sundaes to attendees following each performance.
Handicap facilities will be available for each performance.

About LOoP: Now in its seventh year, the Light Opera of Portland is one of the very few resident musical repertory companies in Oregon. As much an extended family as a group of players, the troupe brings together talented cast and crew members to perform live light opera and musical theatre productions, specializing in the works of Gilbert & Sullivan. Outside of creating a fantasy world on stage, a few LOoP players have real world jobs that are a bit less fanciful, including an insurance agent, a public health manager, an accountant, a policeman, and a forest cartographer. More information is available at www.lightoperaofportland.org.
