Light Opera Of Portland is returning to the stage for the first time since 2019 with a brand new production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic romantic comedy, H.M.S. Pinafore!
Aboard the H.M.S. Pinafore, common sailor Ralph Rackstraw is madly in love with Josephine, the daughter of the ship’s Captain. However, Captain Corcoran is trying to arrange his daughter’s marriage to Sir Joseph Porter, the head of the Royal Navy who has never been to sea in his life! A visit by Sir Joseph to the ship leads the crew to overthrow the boundaries of the rigid class system, and Ralph decides that he will finally tell Josephine of his love for her. Can love break through the barriers of social class? How will Josephine choose between true love and a life of grinding poverty, or a comfortable life with a man she cannot love? What happens when the crew of a naval ship decide they are equal to their officers?
Gilbert’s sparkling script combines comedy at the expense of the rules of society, and incompetent political appointees, while Sullivan’s timeless score combines rollicking sailor songs, sweeping romantic ballads, and pastiches of the bombastic patriotic anthem.
Performances of H.M.S. Pinafore will be held at the Chapel Theater, 4107 SE Harrison St, Milwaukie OR. Performances begin at 7:30pm on May 20th, 21st, 27th and 28th, with matinee performances at 1:30pm on May 22nd and 28th.
